What to know about the summer maintenance of oil tanks

Oil tanks might not be the first thing you think about during summer, but the warmer weather can bring its own set of challenges. From condensation build-up to heat-related wear and tear, your tank can be affected more than you’d expect.

Issues you may experience with your oil tank during summer

It is not uncommon to experience certain problems or issues with your oil tank during the hotter months. The change in temperature and increased sunlight can affect your tank physically as well as lead to potential issues inside.  Here are some things to look out for during summer:

Condensation in Oil Tanks

What causes condensation in oil tanks?

Condensation can cause road contamination inside your oil tank. When your tank gets hot from the summer temperature or from sitting in direct sunlight, condensation can occur in the gap between the oil level and the tank.

Why is condensation bad?

Condensation is the main cause of water contamination, which can:

  • Dilute your heating oil
  • Reduce heating efficiency
  • Encourage sludge from bacterial growth
  • Clog filters and fuel lines
  • Cause corrosive byproducts

Corrosion in Oil Tanks

Can water in oil tanks cause corrosion?

Water contamination from condensation can cause corrosion, especially in steel tanks and older steel tanks. When water sits at the bottom of the tank, it creates the perfect environment for rust to form.

Why is corrosion a serious issue?

Corrosion is a serious issue as it can lead to several problems, including:

  • Pinhole leaks
  • Structural weakness
  • Total tank failure
  • Damage to burners and filters
  • Frozen blockages in winter when trapped water freezes

Bulging and Stretching

Why does my oil tank bulge in summer?

Hot weather can put physical stress on your oil tank, especially if it’s made of plastic. High summer temperatures, or consistent exposure to direct sunlight, can cause the tank to soften slightly and expand. Over time, this can lead to bulging or stretching of the tank walls.

What bigger issues can bulging and stretching of the oil tank cause?

  • Weak seams or cracks
  • Reduced lifespan of the tank
  • Increased chance of leaks when the tank contracts at night

Actions to take to look after your oil tank this summer

A bit of maintenance in summer can save a lot of hassle and money when winter comes around. Let’s take a look at some simple but important actions to take to help keep your oil tank in good health during the summertime.

Inspections

Look out for any signs of rust or corrosion, especially if you have a steel tank, as well as fading, cracks, splits or bulges. These can all be early indicators of wear and tear made worse by the heat. Keep an eye out for leaking oil or any unusual stains on or around the base of the tank, and check that all seals, caps, and fittings are tight and undamaged.

Preventing water contamination

Consider specially designed additives that help absorb or break down any moisture that gets into your tank. Water removal sponges are a handy tool that sit at the bottom of your tank and absorb any water present. You can also use water detection paste; just apply it to the end of a dipstick and check for colour changes that signal water contamination. Installing a water trap in your fuel line can help separate water from oil before it reaches your heating system.

Protect from sunlight and heat

Sunlight and heat are the main culprits behind tank expansion and water buildup. If possible, position your tank in a shaded area or use a cover to block direct sun exposure. Good airflow around the tank is also important, so avoid crowding it with plants, fences, or other items. Proper ventilation helps to regulate the temperature and prevents overheating.

If you think your oil tank has succumbed to problems caused by hot, sunny weather, schedule a replacement or removal with the team at Oil Tank Change.

Top up your tank

Summer is the perfect time to top up your oil tank. Not only does this reduce the space inside the tank where condensation can form, but it’s also often much cheaper than buying oil during the colder months, when demand and prices, typically go up. Keeping your tank topped up helps protect your fuel quality and makes sure you’re ready before the winter rush.

Clean up the area

Have a quick tidy-up around your tank. Overgrown plants, piles of leaves, or random clutter can trap moisture and block airflow, which increases the risk of corrosion, and in extreme cases, even fire hazards. Trim back any vegetation, clear away debris, and make sure the area surrounding the tank is open and well-ventilated. It’s also important to keep clear access for oil deliveries and maintenance. This means less hassle for your supplier and makes it safer and easier to inspect or service the tank if needed.

Disguising your oil tank

Summer is the ideal time to improve how your oil tank looks. Whether you want to soften the visual impact of a bulky tank or help it blend into your garden, now’s a great time to plant shrubs, train climbing plants on a trellis, or install tasteful fencing or screens. Just make sure there’s still enough space around the tank for airflow and access.

Summer is the ideal time to give your oil tank a little extra attention. With regular checks and a few preventative measures, you can avoid costly repairs, maintain fuel quality, and make sure your heating system is ready to go when you need it.
