Single and bunded oil tanks

What's the difference between single skinned & bunded oil tanks?

Whether you’re interested in having a single skinned oil tank or a bunded oil tank, you must understand the differences between the two so that you can make an informed decision.

A single skin tank has one skin that contains the oil. They are generally cheaper than bunded tanks and may be simpler to install and perform maintenance.

A bunded tank has two skins and is often considered a tank within a tank. The first tank holds the oil like a single skin tank, while the second surrounds the first. The outer layer skin acts as a buffer, reducing the risk of spillage if the first tank was to split.

Which oil tank is right for you?

On top of choosing between a single skinned or bunded oil tank, you’ll also need to choose between a plastic oil tank or a metal oil tank. But what are the benefits and which one is best?

Metal Oil Tanks

Pros
  • Highly durable and long-lasting
  • Can hold a higher capacity of fuel
  • Increased security
Cons
  • Harder to move around
  • They can corrode over time
  • More expensive

Plastic Oil Tanks

Pros
  • Easier to install
  • Less prone to failure
  • Transfer of heat for longer
Cons
  • Limit to the fuel capacity
  • Weakens if in extreme weather

Fire Protected

Pros
  • Fire-protected barrier Inside
  • It can be fitted as little as 300mm from a building or boundary.
  • Building regulations require fire Protected tanks to fit within the uninhabited outbuildings or garages or adjacent to commercial properties.
Cons
  • More costly to purchase
  • Less choice of brands and models
  • You are not required to fit an oil tank 1.8m or over from your building and 760mm from your fence.

Slimline Oil Tanks

Limited storage space? A Slimline oil tank might be the right option for you!

Slimline oil tanks typically hold between 1,000 and 1,500 litres of oil and are well-known for their compact size and large capacity. They are ideal for smaller homes with fewer rooms and occupants and for small commercial premises. Their slim and narrow design makes them easy to install in spaces with limited space, and they can also be placed underground, in basements or cellars, and even in outbuildings.

Slimline tanks are available in steel and plastic, in single and bunded designs. They are reliable and space-saving. When full, the oil typically lasts around 6 months, but if it is particularly cold, you may find yourself refilling your tank 3-4 times a year.
