Frequently Asked Questions
Can you move my oil tank to a new location?
Oil tank relocations require an assessment to be carried out, but it can be done.
A qualified and registered technician must carry out this assessment, as they have to identify any environmental and fire risks associated with the new oil tank location.
Once your assessment is complete, your oil tank can be moved to a different location or area of the same property. For older tanks, we recommend replacements, as relocating a worn tank can cause costly spillages.
How often should I service my oil tank?
You should have your overground or indoor tank inspected annually.
Underground tanks should be checked every three years, but this should increase yearly as they age. All oil tank inspections must be recorded; failure to comply with this requirement may void the warranty remaining on the tank.
With this in mind, we encourage oil tank owners to check their oil tank once a month to look for any signs of physical damage, leaks, splits, or spillages.
When should I replace my oil tank?
On average, your oil tank should last for around 10-20 years; however, the lifespan of a tank can vary depending on factors such as its location, exposure to elements, corrosion resistance, and how often it’s serviced.
If you have issues with your tank or believe it has external damage, you should not hesitate to replace it sooner.
Here is an average breakdown of Oil tank lifespans:
- 10-years for Single Skin Oil Tanks;
- 20-years for Bunded Oil Tanks;
- 10-years for Underground Tanks
What are some signs that my oil tank is failing?
There are many ways to spot issues with your oil tank.
- Visible corrosion or rust: With metal oil tanks, you might start to notice corrosion or rust on the exterior of your oil tank: The could be damage due to weather conditions such as heavy precipitation or wear and tear with age.
- Dents or bulges: For plastic tanks, you may notice UV and sun damage has caused bulges in the exterior of your oil tank. Dents may also occur in plastic and steel oil tanks caused by falling debris. Both of these can lead to bigger issues, such as leakages.
- Visible cracks or splits: Noticing visible cracks or splits in your oil tank can indicate that your oil tank is leaking. You can temporarily repair a crack in your oil tank, but you will need to get it replaced in the long term.
- Obvious leakages: If you can smell oil when near your oil tank or visibly see wet patches on the ground, it Is time to replace your oil tank as it is probably leaking.
- Energy efficiency: You might have noticed that you are using more oil than usual or there Is less oil in your tank than you expected. This could be due to a hidden leak and may signify it is time for a new oil tank.

What is classed as an oil tank emergency?
Several scenarios could happen in which we would deem a crisis and recommend our emergency oil tank services. These are as follows:
- Leaking
- Spilling
- Damaged pipework
- Splits
- Cracks
Cracks and splits only need to be considered emergencies if they are below the oil level. Any damage above the oil level still needs to be addressed efficiently to avoid any costly issues.
If you think your oil tank is leaking, contact a team member or call us to use our 24/7 emergency service.
What are the benefits of having an oil tank?
- Efficiency: Oil can heat your appliances to a higher temperature in less time than gas pipelines. As well as being efficient it is a safe way to heat up your property.
- Cost: Most oil tank owners buy oil in bulk and advance, so you can shop around and find the best price before purchasing. You can also stock up by buying lots of oil in one go and prepare for the winter season, something you cannot do if you are on the main gas pipeline.
- Control: Having an oil tank, whether domestic or commercial, means avoiding the main gas lines. As independent from company-owned supply lines, you don’t risk facing issues with supply or cost in the same way. If you live in the countryside, away from main supply pipelines, having an oil tank can also help you to avoid supply issues.
How do I know what size oil tank to get?
There are a lot of things to consider when thinking about what size of domestic oil tank to purchase for your property:
- Amount of people living in the property.
- The number of rooms in the property.
- The number of rooms you want to heat up.
- The size of the property/walls.
- The age of the property.
- Planned location of oil tank.
It is estimated the average house uses 2,500 litres of oil a year; if you opt for a tank of a smaller capacity than this, you can plan your refills so you are covered during the winter months. It is a good idea to go for a slightly bigger oil tank than you think you will need, so you can be prepared.
