Why do I need an
oil tank inspection?
Often, home and business owners who have an oil tank think that if it’s working, they don’t need an oil tank inspection. If you rely on an oil tank, however, it is the beating heart of your home, and if something goes wrong, you could be left in the cold during winter.
Aside from the obvious, this is why it is essential to schedule an annual oil tank inspection:
Environmentally responsible
The smallest crack in your oil tank can lead to a leak, soaking oil into the ground, which can be damaging to plants, wildlife and humans. Not only can cleaning up oil spills cost hundreds of pounds, but you may be subject to a fine of up to £5,000 for polluting the environment. Having an annual oil tank inspection can help prevent these issues before they cost the earth in more ways than one.
Insurance compliance
Many insurance providers require proof that you’ve had an OFTEC-standard oil tank inspection each year, as well as proof of maintenance to ensure you’re abiding by your policy to the letter.
Issue prevention
An annual oil tank inspection can catch potential issues with your oil tank, before they become a problem. Our oil tank inspection professionals will spot if anything looks like it’s going to go wrong, and recommend ways we can fix it.
Longevity
Our annual oil tank inspection service can spot water in your oil tank and sludge buildup in the filter system which may stop your oil tank from functioning as economically as it can, with serious issues potentially warranting a replacement.

oil tank inspection cover?
Our oil tank inspection service in the East of England isn’t just a quick once over. Our fully qualified oil tank inspection professionals will conduct a thorough inspection of your oil tank:
Structural integrity
We will check your oil tank for any defects to the body. If you have a plastic oil tank, this will include checking for whitening or bowing, whereas if you have a steel oil tank, we will look for corrosion and pitting.
Base & support
An oil tank holding hundreds or thousands of litres of oil is extremely heavy. When we conduct an oil tank inspection, we will ensure that the base on which it sits isn’t cracked or uneven, as this can put uneven stress on the tank, leading to cracks and other costly issues.
Water checks
We will inspect the inside of your oil tank to ensure there is no water in the tank, as this can cause your oil tank to run inefficiently, as well as cause sludge and bacteria buildup, and rusting or corrosion.
Pipes and valve inspection
A crucial part of any oil tank inspection is checking pipes and valves. Faulty pipes and valves could cause leaks, which are damaging to the environment, and even the smallest leak could cost you thousands in lost fuel.
Fire safety
One of the most important parts of an oil tank inspection is ensuring that it is positioned in a way that’s compliant with fire safety law and is away from windows and boundaries.

What happens to the oil in my oil tank when it gets Inspected?
During an oil tank inspection, the oil in your tank typically remains undisturbed. The inspection will focus on assessing the tank’s condition, structure, and integrity without necessarily interfering with the contents. A Technician may visually inspect the oil level and look for any signs of leaks or contamination around the tank but won’t usually alter the oil itself. If any issues are detected during the inspection that require the oil to be removed your technician will remofilter your oil and store it in their tank lorry, and filter it back in once the service is complete.
What signs might indicate I need an oil tank inspection?
Signs that you may need an oil tank inspection include visible rust or corrosion on the tank, unexplained increases in fuel usage, strong odours of oil around the tank, signs of oil leaks or spills near the tank, and irregularities in the tank’s structure such as bulging or sagging. Additionally, if your tank is over 10 years old or if you’ve experienced recent severe weather events, it’s advisable to schedule an inspection to ensure the tank’s integrity and safety. Even if you have not noticed any of these signs, but your tank is due its annual inspection, it is very important to get it checked!
