Overview
When should I
replace my oil tank?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer as to when you need an oil tank replacement, but an annual oil tank inspection by one of our OFTEC-certified technicians will give you a full report on the condition of your oil tank.
In general, though, you will need an oil tank replacement between 20-25 years after it has been installed, provided it’s been well-looked after, and there have been no emergencies like oil tank leaks or spillages.
If you have had an oil tank leak, we would recommend getting an oil tank replacement as soon as possible in order to minimise environmental damage and reduce the risk of getting a fine.

Our
Oil Tank Replacement Process
Oil Tank Draining
We will completely drain the oil tank that we’re removing and temporarily store your oil.
Disconnect the Gas Line
Once we’ve drained your oil tank, we will safely disconnect all gas lines whilst we remove your tank, so you will be without hot water and heating for a few hours.
Oil tank removal
We will then completely clean your old oil tank before decommissioning it and safely removing it from your property so that we can dispose of it safely.
Inspecting the Installation Area
We will need to thoroughly inspect the area where your old oil tank was in order to ensure that it meets current UK oil tank requirements. If legislation has changed since your old oil tank was installed, or if there are any issues with the area, we will rectify this to ensure your new oil tank can be installed.
Installing the New Tank
Once we’ve ensured the area is ready, we will install and connect your oil tank before refilling it with the oil that we temporarily removed from the previous oil tank.
Inspection & Testing
Once we’ve replaced your oil tank with a new one, our technician will then inspect and test your new oil tank to ensure it is in good working order, leak-free and adheres to all legal requirements.
Every oil tank replacement is unique and based on the tank you require and your property. Let us provide a free, comprehensive oil tank replacement quote.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I choose the same tank?
When getting a replacement, choosing the same oil tank depends on various factors, such as the tank’s age, condition, and regulatory requirements. Here are some points to consider when choosing your new oil tank:
-
- Regulations may have changed since your original tank was installed. Ensure that the tank you choose meets current safety and environmental standards.
-
- Consider the material of the original tank. If it was steel and had issues with rust, you might opt for a non-corrosive option like plastic.
-
- If your oil usage has changed, you may need a larger or smaller tank. Take into account your current needs and future plans.
-
- Modern tanks may come with additional features, like monitoring systems, leak detection, or double bunds for added safety.
-
- A new tank may have different installation requirements. Ensure that your installation location can accommodate the tank you choose.
- Consider the cost of the new tank, including installation. While a different tank type might have a higher initial cost, it could save you money in the long run due to improved efficiency and fewer maintenance issues.
How do I make sure my old tank is safe to be removed?
Your oil tank should only be removed by an OFTEC technician or other professional. Before your scheduled replacement, you should:
- Make sure the area is free of debris
- Leave a clear pathway to the area for easy removal and installation
- Turn off all appliances attached to the oil tank pipelines
- Keep pets or young children out of the way
How much does an oil tank replacement cost?
The cost of an oil tank replacement can vary greatly depending on several factors, including the size and type of tank, the location, and any additional services needed.
At Oil Tank Change, we are competitively priced and include warranties for your peace of mind. To get an accurate quote for your replacement, get in touch with us today.
Do I need to fill in any documentation?
By using a professional service such as our OFTEC technicians for installation, you will not need to fill out any paperwork or documentation, as they will do it all for you. We will take care of everything at Oil Tank Change, giving you a hassle-free service.
If your installer is not registered on the competent person scheme, you will need to ensure all appropriate documentation has been completed properly.
Finalised paperwork is essential in the case of a warranty claim, manufacturing claim, or if your oil tank leaks or spills; these documents can also provide evidence of proper instalment in the event of a leak.
Does homeowner insurance cover an oil tank replacement?
As homeowner insurance does not cover the cost of oil tank repairs or replacements, getting standalone coverage to protect your tank is a good idea. If you have to replace your tank out of the blue, your oil tank insurance might help you cover it. Oil Tank coverage might also help you with any costs related to spillages and leakages.
Home insurance will sometimes cover the cost of the oil lost during the leakage, but it is best to check your policy carefully in the event of a leak. Find out more information about home insurance and oil tank coverage.
Does my oil tank need to be installed by an OFTEC Technician?
Only a competent person can install domestic oil tanks on your property; this is usually an OFTEC Technician.
Having an accredited technician install, inspect, or remove your tank is crucial for ensuring its proper installation and longevity. OFTEC Technicians must work to a set of regulations and often have their work inspected to ensure they are practising to a high level. An OFTEC Technician will also ensure all paperwork and documentation has also been filled out properly offering you peace of mind. If you decide to have your tank installed by someone not registered on a competent person scheme, you will need to pay local authorities to inspect your tank.
